Why did you start charging for lessons?

Fields’ Karate is more about teaching the art and influencing the students than it is about making money, not that there’s anything wrong with making money from a Karate school.  Sensei Sid hopes to keep tuition as low as reasonably possible and so tuition rates are largely based on overhead costs. Previously, Sensei Sid had no overhead costs because we did not have a space to rent.  That has now changed and we must charge a tuition fee to cover rent, insurance, and other costs.

What do I need to wear to class?

Eventually, you’ll have a Karate uniform, a “Gi,” to wear to class.  But until then just wear something modest that you can move in easily.  Athletic shorts with a T-shirt are perfect when it’s hot and sweatpants with a sweatshirt or T-shirt are great for when it is cooler.  The important thing is not to wear something that restricts your movement.

Do I need any special gear to train in Karate?

The gear you need will be minimal.  Most of the training gear is provided by Sensei Sid.  Here are a few things you will need and by when:

  1. Karate Gi (Uniform) and Mouthguard by Yellow Belt.
  2. Personal Sparring Gear (Headgear, Boots, Gloves, & Cup for Boys) by Blue Belt (Preferably as a Yellow Belt).

There is plenty of gear out there that can aid your practice at home.  You are welcome to purchase things like punching bags, focus pads, exercise equipment, and practice weapons but do not feel that these are required.

Do you sell retail items?

Sensei Sid does sell retail items but does not maintain a large or varying stock.  He does not have the cash flow or warehouse space for that sort of operation.  However, he can order anything you might need and can almost always give you a better price than the MSRP.

Please consider purchasing your uniforms, sparring gear, bags, pads, exercise equipment, practice weapons, gifts, and accessories through Sensei Sid.  By doing this you are supporting the dojo and helping to keep monthly tuition costs as low as possible.  Sensei Sid’s primary suppliers are listed below in order of preference (based on quality and cost):

  1. Century Martial Arts (Strongest Recommendation)
  2. Macho Martial Arts
  3. Asian World of Martial Arts
